Miss Julia
Thursday - Saturday 7:30PM; Sunday at 2PMLa MaMa First Floor Theater
74A East 4th StMiss Julia is coming to New York’s La MaMa! We’ve performed this bilingual adaptation of Strindberg’s classic at festivals in Colombia, Spain and Italy and it is our great pleasure to finally give audiences stateside an opportunity to experience this piece. We’re opening this week and the play runs from June 8 through June 25.
Here’s our blurb: In Colombia on Midsummer Eve, Miss Julia and her servant Juan have an encounter that will change their lives forever. As Juan tries to rise from the depths of his servile life, Miss Julia wants to escape her meaningless upper-class existence. The resulting power play of love, lust and class struggle becomes a dangerous battle that veers violently out of control.
This bilingual production, performed in English and Spanish, is a clash of cultures, a dance of death combining powerful physicality, naturalistic text and evocative live music, making Strindberg’s text as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Colombia’s Vueltas Bravas Producciones pursues avenues of cross-cultural collaboration to create innovative theatrical works that push the boundaries of theatre.
